On September 28, 2025, the people of Moldova made history. Against enormous odds, they preserved their democracy, their sovereignty, and their European future.
Despite unprecedented interference by the Russian Federation — including an estimated $400 million spent on dark money schemes, disinformation campaigns, and manipulation through bots and fake accounts on TikTok and Telegram — Moldovans stood firm. They showed the world that democracy, truth, and courage can prevail over authoritarian deception and coercion.
President Maia Sandu and her government demonstrated extraordinary leadership in guiding Moldova through this storm. Their resilience, along with the determination of Moldova’s citizens, ensured that the Kremlin’s hybrid warfare failed to undermine free elections.
Truth and democracy won the day against the tsunami of disinformation and lies promulgated by the authoritarian Russian government and its secret services. Democracies and free people showed their courage and pushed back against the darkness from Moscow. The United States and European leaders and citizens stood shoulder to shoulder with the people of Moldova in their quest to preserve freedom and the rule of law.
The courage of Moldovans shows the world that free people will not be silenced by the malign influence of authoritarian actors who seek to steal freedom and democracy. Moldova has chosen freedom, justice, and Europe — and in so doing, has strengthened the cause of democracy everywhere.
International Support
The world has taken notice of Moldova’s achievement. The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee issued a bipartisan statement underscoring America’s commitment to Moldova’s democratic future and condemning Russia’s interference. Similarly, a group of former U.S. Ambassadors to Romania, Moldova, and the OSCE issued a joint declaration of solidarity, affirming Moldova’s right to choose freedom, European integration, and sovereignty.
These messages of support reflect the transatlantic unity that Moldova’s fight for democracy has inspired. They also remind us that Moldova’s success is not just a national victory — it is a regional and global one.
Moldova’s Choice Is the World’s Choice
